    The Church of the Immaculate conception in Jacksonville, Fl., it was founded with another name by Fr. HamIlton in 1846. It is one of the first Catholic Church in the State of Florida. This Catholic Church is in the center of the city of Jacksonville. It was rebuilt with beautifil stained glass windows and marble altars later on. The Statrue of the Virgin Mary, at the front of the Church survived intact, as you can see here in this photo. The marble main altar. Stained glass windows in the back of the Church of the Immaculate Conception, downtown Jacksonville. These windows were made in Bavaria, Germany in the late 1910's by the Franz Miller Company. They are invaluable works of art. The LAST SUPPER OF JESUS made of Carrara Marble.     Pedro Menendez de Aviles landed in Florida in 1556. HE WAS NAMED BY PHILIP II with the title of ADELANTADO DE LA FLORIDA and FIRST GOVERNOR OF FLORIDA. Five sailboats came with Menendez de Aviles. They landed near present day City of St. Augustine. He founded the first European city in North America First Mass said in North America, in the Mission called NOMBRE DE DIOS, St. Augustine, Florida 1565. Father Francisco Lopez de Mendoza Grajales, chaplain of Adelantado Pedro Menendez de Aviles, said the Mass. This First Mass said in North America , September 8th, 1965. The first Church in St. Augustine looked like this. First Catholic Parish built in Florida in 1565. The landing place for Governor Pedro Menendez de Aviles was called Nombre de Dios. The Timicuan Tribe , who lived near by, were very helpful to the Spaniards as they settle in St. Augustine, North Florida. A model of the first fort in St. Augustine. Pedro Menendez de Aviles was the Governor of the Spanish Colony of Florida 1565 to 1572. He arrived in the Galeon Saint Pelayo with 300 Spaniards. Other smaller vessels made up the fleet. EX-SLAVES AND RUN AWAYS FROM ENGLISH NORTH CAROLINA, WHO BECAME PART OF THE SPANISH ARMY. THEY MADE UP A TOWN, NORTH OF FLORIDA AND ST. AUGUSTINE, NAMED ST. TERESA OF FORT MOSE. MANY RUN AWAYS- SLAVES BROGHT THEIR WIVES AND BUILT HOMES IN SPANISH FLORIDA. THEY DISLIKED THEIR FORMER ENGLISH MASTERS IN THE CAROLINAS AND VIRGINIA. SPANISH FLORIDA WAS MORE HUMANE WITH THEM. At NOMBRE DE DIOS LANDING, a Spanish priest Fr. Mendoza de Grijalva celebrated the FIRST MASS. The Spaniards brought the devotion to OUR LADY OF LA LECHE. A little Shrine was made to St. Mary the Mother of God under the advocation of Our Lady of la Leche. View more
