Gesù is the oldest Catholic Church in all of South Florida, founded in April of 1896, before the City of Miami was incorporated. It is one of the few institutions that preserve the history of the city.
People consider Gesù to be more like a SANCTUARY through which many generations have passed. Soldiers from the Spanish American War worshipped here in 1898, and Veterans from the First World War prayed here after arriving from Europe in 1917. When all of Miami was a training camp during World War II in the 1940s, soldiers came to Gesù to receive the Sacraments.
Gesù was featured in an article describing 8 historic places worth visiting in Miami. You can read the entire article here.
