Dear Friends of Gesù:
Gesù is the oldest Catholic Church in all of South Florida, founded in April of 1896, before the City of Miami was incorporated. It is one of the few institutions that preserve the history of the city.
People consider Gesù to be more like a SANCTUARY through which many generations have passed. Soldiers from the Spanish American War worshipped here in 1898, and Veterans form the First World War prayed here after arriving from Europe in 1917. When all of Miami was a training camp during World War II in the 1940s, soldiers came to Gesù to receive the Sacraments.
Many Cuban exiles consider Gesù the first Catholic Church they visited. Assistance was given to them in many forms through the Centro Hispano Católico. Gesù has also helped many refugees from other Latin American countries.
Gesù High School and Gesù School educated many children since its beginning in 1905, when the Sisters of St. Joseph staffed the first Catholic school in our city. Our Alumni and Alumnae are grateful for the faith and education the Jesuit Priest provided to them.
Presently Gesù is GOD’S EMBASSY in downtown Miami. The Catholic Church is now PRESENT in a growing downtown Miami. Many professionals and businessmen stop here to pray and go to Confession and Mass. We provide a place to pray in silence in a very busy neighborhood.
I welcome you to Gesù. COME AND VISIT US!
